Ploče
is the secondary center of the lower Neretva area. That new town was
founded after the Second World War at the place where sea, delta plain and
Karst frame meet. The Ploče locality was mentioned at the mouth of
the river as early as in the fourteenth century. It was noted down in one
merchant document in 1387. Some later documents mention it as a favorable
place for the anchorage of smaller merchant ships. Since the old Metković
port only offered modest opportunities, they started thinking about building
a new port in the thirties of the twentieth century, and after lots of years
of commercial and political oppositions the youngest town on our coast
was
created in the thirties. That is the town to which for decades its original
purpose determined the destiny of a big dormitory and working place from
which people would go to their villages in the near surrounding. Ploče
got its cemetery in 1976 and it will get its first church in this decade. I
will be situated close by the sea in the city center.
